The PokemonGo game was released in 2016, popularizing the concept of augmented reality among the general public. In the present, we have a metaverse that is expanding, and the creators are experimenting with the various aspects of augmented reality. That begins the question: what exactly is augmented reality? Let us understand.
What is augmented reality?
"Augmented reality (AR) is the real-time use of information in the form of text, graphics, audio, and other virtual enhancements integrated with real-world objects." (Source: Gartner.com)
AR helps us see things around us, like trees, castles, treasures, and much more, with an augmented layer on them. We need to have a device to view the objects. Apart from the use of AR in games, there are various other uses too. For example, IKEA uses AR to help customers visualize how furniture will look in their homes. AR is also used in navigation.
Metaverse
The metaverse can be understood as a network of shared, immersive virtual worlds where people can connect with friends, create and play games, work, and shop. Metaverse is like cyberspace, or an evolved, three-dimensional internet where logging in isn’t necessary. It may also incorporate elements of virtual and augmented reality.
Here are a few Metaverse examples:
Roblox
Fortnite
Meta Horizon
Second Life
Minecraft
The Sandbox
Decentraland
How does Metaverse use augmented reality?
While some might believe that AR and the metaverse are the same things, let us understand in detail how they are different. Metaverse is, as mentioned, a three-dimensional internet, and it uses AR to visualize objects along with other tools. Augmented reality adds one more dimension to it.
The AR technique has a certain degree of power, convincing your brain that those elements exist in your environment. And that's when your current environment becomes a lot more interesting. (Source: Cointelegraph.com)
With the addition of AR, the world around you appears more interesting and fun. You can visualize dragons, knights, and whatnot because the elements of audio, video and texts bring imagination to life.
What should we expect from AR in the coming years?
Augmented reality has a long way to go. We are in the initial stages of utilizing AR in our technologies and devices. Various architects and designers use AR to visualize elements before finalizing the design. Brands like Lenskart use AR for 3D spectacle trials. Users can try various styles without even visiting the store.
To summarize, businesses are investing in augmented reality as a tool to increase sales and improve product quality. We can expect a lot more from AR in the coming years.
